What we need, she says, is a much more mature set of transaction mechanisms.

Not in the future. The global population is increasing rapidly, set to reach 11.5 billion by 2050.

Adaptive re-use: retrofit architecture & the climate emergency

Inefficiency abounds when every building is a prototype and we start from scratch with the design and build process each and every time.At Bryden Wood, we believe the key to solving both the housing shortage and the wider construction crisis lies in the use of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC).. Housing Design with Modern Methods of Construction.By Modern Methods of Construction, we refer to those transformative and often technologically innovative methodologies which enable rapid, safe and efficient assembly of building parts rather than traditional construction.

Adaptive re-use: retrofit architecture & the climate emergency

Tools and processes such as automation in construction, Platform Design for Manufacture and Assembly (P-DfMA), and computational design approaches can help us create a brighter future, both for the built environment and the construction industry as a whole. Our PRiSM housing design app is just one such tool.

Adaptive re-use: retrofit architecture & the climate emergency

PRiSM brings speed and insight to the housing design process by harnessing the benefits of standardisation and automation, whilst promoting creativity and flexibility.. Our primary goal when we developed PRiSM was to help democratise the knowledge around Precision Manufactured Housing (PMH), a term which refers to homes designed and built using MMC principles.

PMH homes can be built up to twice as fast and to a higher standard than those built with traditional construction methods.Students sometimes wrongly think of crits as an occasion for your tutors to tell you everything you've done wrong, but should instead be seen as an opportunity to discuss the project and its aims objectively.. BW: What one piece of advice would you give to an architecture student prepping for their crit?.

M: I would probably say it's incredibly important to have a plan on how you will be presenting your work.Don't forget you will be presenting in front of people who may have never seen your work before, so be clear and to the point.

It's also really important to keep an open mind to any feedback you might get. It's easy to get defensive when you're being critted because at that time you define yourself through your project (having worked on it consistently for weeks and weeks, often losing sleep to get those drawings finished), but a crit is not there to judge you and your worth but to ultimately make you a better architect. As champions of both company innovation and diversity, Bryden Wood are delighted to have three exceptional team members selected as finalists for the prestigious European Women In Construction and Engineering Awards.
